What is E-Play/Stim?

E-Play and E-Stim are the names given to the practice of using electrical stimulation applied to the body often for sexual and other pleasurable purposes.

E-Play specifically refers to such use in the practice of BDSM (Bondage/Discipline and Sado/Masochism). We're specifically referring to the safe, sane, consensual, and non-exploitative practices and not the sadistic or punishment seeking behaviors seen in abusive relationships, military or political torture, prison environments, and other authoritarian institutions. As with many consensual BDSM scenes, the use of electricity is intended to produce pleasure in a partner to enhance intimacy. While the intensity of sensations may vary, the keynote of E-Play is SAFETY.

E-Stim, on the other hand, is electricity used as an auto-erotic (masturbation) activity. Very rarely is such an activity done in a BDSM context. And while E-Stim is often done alone and in private, some E-Stim'ers will use their equipment surreptitiously in public. One again SAFETY is of primary importance.

Equipment used in E-Play and E-Stim vary from low-voltage TENS Units (Transcutaneous Electric Neural Stimulators) to high voltage but low current Violet Wands to computers. Some users even develop their own equipment. Creativity in the non-traditional uses of traditional electrical stimulation equipment, in fact, is one of the enticements of this field. That's why it's important to LEARN and UNDERSTAND all you can to SAFELY play in E-Stim or E-Play.
