FAQ -
Is it OK to do electrical play across the nipples? From time to time Unc' gets an e-mail with the typical question below. This happens often enough to warrant this article.

Hi.I wonder if you can give me some advice? Is it safe to apply a TENS machine to the nipples with no danger to the heart. Thanks Cheers Concerned |
Even though a TENS unit is used here, other e-mails have asked about other E-Play/Stim Units |

Dear Concerned, |

Unfortunately there's no easy answer on this. Certainly there are what I would call old wives tales saying "Do no electrical play above the waist," but are statements like this useful or even safe? |
As I say in all my classes and in my book, Juice-Electricity for Pleasure and Pain*, all ...repeat all... electrical play involves some current through the heart¨ . This would include TENS units, Violet Wands, or shuffling your feet across a carpet on a cold, dry day and zapping nipples. The question is, how much current. I talk a lot about this in my book. |

Before I address the subject at hand, let me say that in Juice I try to get people to think ahead on electrical play. It's not a physical play skill like flogging. You have to know what is happening when you do play (thus my motto, SAFETY through UNDERSTANDING)*. Juice strives to present the minimum set of the necessary information you should know in order to assess your own risk. Then you can make a decision on whether to go ahead based on this risk assessment. |
* The reason E-Play/Stim is not a physical skill is that if something goes wrong in E-Play/Stim, you can't act fast enough to turn off the switch to save your partner or yourself. (See Juice-Electricity for Pleasure and Pain pages 12 and 13.) |

With the current through the heart and the SAFETY through UNDERSTANDING points in mind, let me address the nipple play issue by pointing you to the following URL's on my website: |
Two Dimensional Modeling of Currents Within a Conducting Medium -- An experiment conducted by Unc' showing a first approximation of currents that may exist inside a human body due to the popular nipple electrode arrangements. It should be noted that the currents through the body rapidly diminish from the direct path between the electrodes. From Unc's website - Unc's Experiments (NOTE: This will be on a separate page. Delete that page to return to this page.) |
The Balloon Experiment -- Another of Unc's experiments demonstrating that Violet Wands run current through a human body, not over its surface. From Unc's website - Unc's Experiments (NOTE: Use your Browser's BACK button to return to this page.) |
Electric Current Effects on the Body -- Based on the UL™ tables. Gives some values on current effects. From Unc's website - Unc's Articles (NOTE: Use your Browser's BACK button to return to this page.) |
I might also mention that a several years ago, I conducted a survey from the extant e-mail groups of those who do nipple-to-nipple play. Of the 28 who responded (from then of about 1000 people), none reported any bad results. And in the estimated 1/4-million folk who do electrical play around the world, you don't hear a lot about bad effects. Mind you, some are indeed reported (see |
Reported Health Effects of E-Play/Stim -- Based on cases from various E-Play/Stim e-mail groups and as reported directly to Unc' From Unc's website (NOTE: This will be on a separate page. Delete that page to return to this page.) |
Now there is one medical condition where E-Play/Stim is contra-indicated. Because all electrical play involves some current through the heart, people with heart conditions or with pacemakers shouldn't do E-Play/Stim--at least without getting an OK from your personal physician. |
(See Juice-Electricity for Pleasure and Pain pages 75 to 78.) |
So in summary, except for people with heart conditions or pacemakers, it might ...repeat might... be OK to do nipple-to-nipple play, but the evidence is mostly anecdotal in nature. |
So perhaps the 'ol' wives tale' of "...no electrical play above the waist..." has some safety basis, i.e., the further away from the heart the current is the better off you might be, but the choice remains--as it always has--with you and your partner. It's the responsibility of both of you to inform yourselves of the mechanisms and risks, and decide on the basis of that. |

I hope that helps. And remember: Play Safe. Unc' |
